Greetings Ontario Referee / Umpire,

We wish to welcome you to the 2017 Ontario Lacrosse season. Officiating lacrosse is truly a rewarding experience. Referees and umpires are crucial to the sport - without them, we cannot play. There are many reasons why people begin officiating, and even more reasons why referees and umpires return year after year. We have some exciting changes for the clinic registration process this year, so please read along carefully.

On behalf of the Referee Development Committee, I wish you a safe and enjoyable 2017 officiating season.

Yours in lacrosse,

Frank Lawrence

VP Officiating
Ontario Lacrosse Association

Notice: Criminal Record Checks for all Officials

All OLA certified officials (box, men's field and women's field) who are 18 years old as of January 1, 2017 must submit a current criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening upon registering for the current year (for returning officials, an Offence Declaration). Should an official fail to provide a criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening, they will be ineligible to officiate for that season.

Your CRC / VSS is your "ticket" to attend your clinic - you must bring the official copy  (not a photocopy) to your clinic in order to be admitted. Your CRC / VSS should be placed in a sealed envelope with your name written on it and handed in to the Head Clinician at your clinic. Each CRC / VSS is valid for a period of four seasons, at which point an updated CRC / VSS must be submitted.

Applying for a Criminal Record Check can take anywhere between 4-8 weeks to complete, so it is recommended that you begin this process as soon as possible. For officials who wish to use Backcheck to apply for their CRC / VSS, please follow this link.

The Ontario Lacrosse Association is pleased to announce its 2017 lacrosse referee/umpire certification clinic dates. Interested individuals who wish to officiate OLA-sanctioned lacrosse (box, men's field and women's field) games in 2017 are required to attend one of the following certification clinics. In order to attend a clinic, individuals must be minimum 14 years old as of December 31, 2017. Each clinic begins promptly at 9am. Lunch is provided in the registration cost. Entry level officials are encouraged to contact their association's referee-in-chief for information prior to attending clinic.

Rules of the Classroom:

  1. Clinic sign-in is held from 8:00AM 8:45AM. There will be no walk-up registration available.

  2. Each clinic begins at 9am and will conclude no later than 3:30pm. Late arrivals and/or early departures (ie. hockey try-outs, work schedules, etc.) are not permitted under any circumstances.

  3. Referees/Umpires who submitted their CRC in 2015 or 2016 are required to complete an offense declaration form and bring it to their clinic for admittance. Referees/Umpires who are 18 years old as of January 1, 2017 must bring their completed CRC/VSS to their clinic to be admitted - no exceptions.

  4. All classroom materials will be provided. Each attendee must bring a pen to their clinic.

  5. Participants are expected to be engaged throughout the day. Cell phone use is not permitted during instruction.

  6. Lunch is provided in the registration cost of each clinic. Alternate arrangements may be made for dietary reasons by speaking with one of the clinicians at the registration table before 8:45am.

  7. Officials will be writing the CLA's Officiating Exam during the final module of the day.

  8. Our learning spaces are often donated or secured for modest costs. In the past, it has been brought to our attention that some facilities have been damaged or vandalized, or left untidy by our participants. In order to keep the costs of our clinics as low as possible, we ask that all participants treat our facilities with respect at all times. Disciplinary action may be taken against individuals who fail to follow this direction.

Clinic Objectives:

  1. To teach the standard methods and procedures of officiating

  2. To instruct uniform interpretation of the rules across the province

  3. To learn effective communication strategies and techniques

  4. To pair the growth of officials with the growth of the game
